Introducing CA Home+Design Design Tastemaker of 2014

We asked you to submit and vote on up-and-coming influencers in the design world, and we loved learning about the unique talents of each nominee. The results are in, and we are so thrilled to announce that the 2014 CA Home+Design Awards Tastemaker sponsored by Thos. Moser is the effervescent Lana Gomez!

The remarkable way Lana Gomez pushes the boundaries of color and composition, translating the inspiring world of LA design into vibrant abstract paintings, has more than earned her the title of Design Tastemaker. But in a new era of discovering and buying art via social media, Lana doesn’t rely on talent alone. Leveraging Instagram to tap into the everyday lives of her loyal fan base, Lana snaps pics of works in progress and lifestyle shots (this girl’s got serious personal style!), recruiting new devotees in the process.

Although it's no surprise that Lana was a gifted artist from a young age, it wasn't until attending the structured painting program at the University of Tennessee that she began to, "get out of my head and follow my intuition, my own path." After honing in on her now-signature style Lana moved out to Los Angeles in 2007 where her work caught the attention of famed West Coast designer Kelly Wearstler, who became her design mentor.

Together they produced china, wallpaper, and fabric patterns. "Not only was Kelly an exceptionally talented and smart modern-day icon," says Lana, "but she is the sweetest person you've ever met – and that's incredible refreshing." Lana thrived under Kelly's tutelage; two creative women with a penchant for daring, bold style? Sounds like a match made in heaven. Kelly's ever-changing inspiration boards helped Lana see that by pulling together seemingly disparate images with a designer's eye, an exciting, cohesive story will start to unfold.

With a self-proclaimed "mad scientist of paint" mentality, Lana thrives on experimenting with color and layout, pouring and mixing acrylics that settle into swirling patterns on large-scale canvases. She turns to Alexander McQueen and St. Laurent runway shows for color palette inspiration, and pulls title ideas from nostalgic family sayings (like her grandfather's colorful "Don't bullshit a bullshitter" motto and her dad's "Who got cream cheese in the jelly?"). These quirky details infuse each piece with a bit of Lana's gutsy personality and are every bit as endearing as the artist herself.

When she's not in her studio, Lana acts as Creative Director for husband Sebastian Maniscalco's comedy company, designing printed material and staging photo shoots. Always looking for ways to make her art accessible to everyone, Lana is currently exploring possibilities of launching a product line to connect with fans who may not be ready to invest in a large art piece. And Beyoncé, if you’re reading this, she’d love to make a custom piece for you, too!

In true Tastemaker form, Lana is all about staying totally true to your passions, even if people don’t get it at first. "No one has ever made a difference by doing the expected," advises Lana. "It's okay to not always be inspired! Do different things to exercise the brain."

Congratulations, Lana! Be sure to look for her feature in the spring 2014 issue. Until then, check out her new pieces in installations at Niche in West Hollywood, Boulan South Beach Hotel in Miami, and The Quin Hotel in New York City. Discover more of Lana’s beautiful designs on her website, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
